What a New Year’s Eve!
Like last year, I went from work to the casino to ring in the new year. Unlike last year though, the night seemed to follow the path of the year that it was concluding by being chaos followed by calm in a roller coaster like fashion. It was a bit much. Hopefully 2019 will be a little less like that.
The last day of 2018 started with a full day of work for me. Working in a museum means that you don’t get a lot of time off or can take the holidays off like in other businesses. The museum that I work at is also a location for First Night Hartford and we were hosting Kids Fest. As always, this never runs as smoothly as it should. There are just too many moving parts.
Unlike last year, where the night was cut short by bitterly cold conditions, this year brought nearly 600 people through our doors and kept the team busy all night. I was going between counting entries, managing the craft space, and making sure the musicians were taken care of. So yes, I did get a bit overwhelmed. I also learned to wear sneakers or flats next time.
With all of those negatives, I do have to say that the night went well but I was ready to leave as soon as I could. You can only take so much when you’re running on four hours of sleep and know you’ll be up until at least 3am.
Following work, Tim and I drove down to the hotel that we would be staying at in Groton and got ready as quickly as we could. We only had about an hour to get ready and that was going to be tight for me to work with. I did it though. I managed to get my hair curled and make up done (full glam) in about fifty minutes. The next step was just getting a Lyft to the casino.
Once at Mohegan Sun, we made a bee line straight for Tom’s Urban where we had reservations that we were now late for. Good thing my friend Hannah got there on time! We had a nice dinner together and some drinks that were only mildly interrupted by me having a horrible headache and getting sick. Oops. I managed to boot and rally, as they say, and feel a bit better by the time we were heading to the New Year’s party in the Ballroom.
This year’s theme for the Party Into the New Year festivities was Rio Carnival and the designers did not disappoint. The first thing you saw when you walked into the ballroom was a giant lizard and girls in feathers. Very on theme. The music was already blaring by the time we walked in but, luckily, the open bar lines weren’t too bad yet.
Our small group of four chatted the night away before Tim and I split off to dance and countdown to 2019. I can finally check off getting a midnight kiss from my bucket list! It only took two different boyfriends and twenty four years (five years of dating though).
We decided to wrap our night at the slot machines where I won $20 and Hannah, my friends we attended with, won almost $100. Not to shabby. That was more than enough to get some Krispy Kreme donuts before heading back to the hotel.
From here, it was all sweet dreams and an 11am check out.
Happy New Year! May your 2019 be easy going and filled with everything you need.
