Alright, I mentioned starting this series MONTHS ago but it has been taking a lot longer than I thought to get around to writing it. So, as a part of Blogmas 2018, here is the first installment of my Nutmeg Love series. Today, we’re looking at some of the best holiday activities and events happening throughout Connecticut.
Let There Be Light!
Like many places, there are dozens of holiday light set ups across the state. Here are a few stand outs and personal favorites.
Holiday Light Fantasia in Hartford– This was always my favorite thing to do when I was a little kid. I lived up the street from Goodwin Park and could see some of the lights from our back porch. The best night of December, next to Christmas of course, was when we would hop in the car and go through the light tunnels and spot all of the new additions to the drive through the park. Can’t wait to do it this year!
Holiday Lights at Lake Compounce– While generally known as a summer destination, this amusement park is in its fifth year transforming into a winter wonderland. The park is covered in festive lights and offers holiday shopping, caroling, ice carving, and more! Plus some of the rides are even open, although mostly for the kids.
Christmas Comes to the Capitol
Living near Hartford and working in the Capitol city, I of course have to highlight some of the cool events happening here.
Festival of Trees and Traditions at the Wadsworth– While only open until December 9th, this annual exhibit is in its 45th year. Done as a charity event, local community members, artists, and organizations decorate trees and wreaths to put on display. People can purchase the decorated trees for themselves or to donate them.
Winterfest Hartford– Located in Bushnell Park, Winterfest is a free event happening now through January. It offers free skating, a market on December 15, music, pictures with Santa and more!
Holiday Open House at the Governor’s Residence– Governor Dan Malloy and First Lady Cathy Malloy are hosting the annual holiday open house at the Governor’s Residence in Hartford December 7-9th. Tour the home of Connecticut’s Governor while being entertained by local talent and looking at the locally donated trees and plants for this holiday season.
First Night Hartford– Ring in the new year in Downtown with the 30th annual First Night celebration. There’s music, fireworks, activities for all ages, and more! Take the kids out early before you head out to bring in the New Year with the adults.
Of course, there are hundreds of other events happening throughout the winter. Various markets, plays, celebrations and more are happening now through January. If you planned it just right, you could do one even every day of the month or at least every weekend!
