Favorite Twenty One Pilots Songs

Alright, I’m writing this post because a) I’ve been busy this week so I couldn’t write a more in depth post and b) Bandito Tour tickets went one sale today and I got my tickets! Anyone else going to the Boston show?

So, for today you’re getting my Top 20 Twenty One Pilots songs. This is definitely going to be a tough post to write because Tyler and Josh have so many great songs! I’ll be picking from Twenty One PilotsRegional at BestVesselBlurryface, and what we have so far from Trench. These aren’t in any particular order but each album is represented. I just couldn’t put them in an actual order… Oh well. Lets get into it!

Twenty One Pilots, 2009

Their self titled first album is the best place to jump in with Twenty One Pilots if you want to break away from their singles. Of course, unlike the follow up Regional at Best, it does fit their sound as they’ve gotten more popular. Although this album is definitely more melancholy and light, if that’s the right word, when compared to say Blurryface and what we have from Trench so far.

Addict with a Pen

This was the first song that I absolutely fell in love with off of this album. Of course, I was first introduced to Twenty One Pilots based on their singles from Vessel but once I started listening to their first two albums, I knew I was hooked.

Favorite Lyric: “I’m only at it again/ As an addict with a pen/ Who’s addicted to the wind/ As it blows me back and forth/ Mindless, spineless, and pretend/ Of course I’ll be here again”

Isle of Flightless Birds

The concluding song on the album, Isle of Flightless Birds examines the human condition. What is our purpose? How can we be happy? Along with the deeper meaning, this song has a different tone to it than most of the other songs in their catalog.

Favorite Lyric: “All we are is an isle of flightless birds/ We find our worth in giving birth and stuff/ We’re lining our homes against winding roads/ And we think the going is tough/ We pick songs to sing, remind us of things that nobody cares about/ And honestly we’re probably more suicidal than ever now”

March to the Sea

There is something about these simple story like songs that I just love. March to the Sea is just so simple but beautiful in it’s lyrics. Again, we hear Tyler dealing with his demons and the choices before him.

Favorite Lyric: “And as we’re near the end of land/ And our ocean graves are just beyond the sand/ I ask myself the question/ Why I fall in line”

Oh Ms. Believer

This is another one that I love for its simplicity. In it’s melancholy, this song is almost a love song– or is. These people realize that time moves on so they go it together. Or at least that is my interpretation.

Favorite Lyric: h, Ms. Believer, my pretty weeper/ Your twisted thoughts are like snow on the rooftops/ Please, take my hand, we’re in foreign land/ As we travel through snow

Regional at Best, 2011

This album is now near impossible to find with the exception of on YouTube. Quite the shame because there are some beautiful and amazing songs on this album. Although several do show up late on Vessel.

Here’s the playlist for the whole album:

Forest

This is one of my absolute favorite songs from Twenty One Pilots and I hate that it isn’t on Spotify or anywhere except YouTube. When I first started seeing TOP live, they usually included this song towards the end of their set. The first time I heard it I looked it up as soon as I got home and listened to it almost every day.

Favorite Lyric: “I don’t wanna be heard/ I wanna be listened to/ Does it bother anyone else/ That someone else has your name?”

Kitchen Sink

This is another one that they they used to play on tour from time to time that I fell in love with. It was also one of the Twenty One Pilots songs that my boyfriend mentioned liking when we first started dating, which caught me by surprise. Still love this song and, again, I’m so mad that I can’t listen to any of these songs on Spotify…. Also, this song features Tyler’s brother Zach rapping and he’s pretty good. Definitely check it out!

Favorite Lyric: “Nobody thinks what you think, no one/ Empathy might be on the brink of extinction/ They will play a game and say/ They know what you’re going through/ And I tried to come up with an artistic way to say/They don’t know you, and neither do I”

Anathema

This song is just so beautiful. That’s it. That’s all I have to say. Well that and it is another great example of TOP having these beautiful intro that then go into Tyler’s intense, deep raps.

Favorite Lyric: “You will never know what’s behind my skull/ So won’t you say good night, so I can say goodbye/ You will never know what’s under my hair/ So won’t you say good night, so I can say goodbye/ You will never know what’s under my skin/ So won’t you say good night, so I can say goodbye/ You will never know what is in my veins/ So won’t you say good night, so I can say goodbye”

Lovely

There’s something about Lovely that is just… different. It almost doesn’t fit in with the rest of the songs released by Twenty One Pilots. It fits and it doesn’t. But that’s this band in a nutshell.

Favorite Lyrics: “Your redemption won’t grow stale/ We are now just setting sail/ On the seas of what we fear/ Treason now is growing near to me”

Vessel, 2013

Truth be told, it took a lot of self control to not put the whole album on this list because the whole album is just so good. I’m fairly certain that it is my favorite album as a whole.

Holding on to You

First of all, this song has a great music video and I highly recommend looking it up. Second, this is just a great song. It can be a little all over the place but if you want to introduce someone to Twenty One Pilots, this is where you should start.

Favorite Lyric: “Fight it,/ Take the pain, ignite it,/ Tie a noose around your mind/ Loose enough to breathe fine and tie it/ To a tree. Tell it, “You belong to me./ This ain’t a noose, this is a leash./ And I have news for you: you must obey me.”

Ode to Sleep

Wanna walk about a perfect song to kick off an album? This is it. It immediately brings you in and goes in hard. Also this is a great song live. If memory serves, they used to open their shows with this song for a while.

Favorite Lyric: “Why it’s got to be like this. Is this living free?/ I don’t want to be the one, be the one who has the sun’s blood on my hands,/ I’ll tell the moon, take this weapon forged in darkness,/ Some see a pen, I see a harpoon.”

Migraine

You know, I’m not sure that there is a bad song on this album. Honestly.

Favorite Lyric: “Thank God it’s Friday/ ‘Cause Fridays will always be better than Sundays/ ‘Cause Sundays are my suicide days,/ I don’t know why they always seem so dismal,/ Thunderstorms, clouds, snow, and a slight drizzle,/ Whether it’s the weather or the letters by my bed,/ Sometimes death seems better than the migraine in my head,”

Guns for Hands

This may have been the first song by Twenty One Pilots that I absolutely fell in love with. I would listen to it on repeat for weeks after seeing the boys open for Panic! at the Disco and Fall Out Boy in 2013.

Favorite Lyric: “I know what you think in the morning,/ When the sun shines on the ground,/ And shows what you have done,/ It shows where your mind has gone,”

Trees

This used to be the closed song on tour for a while and it is the perfect closer. There is just so much musical energy and the boys just shine.

Truce

This song is just a beautiful, peaceful way to end an album. It is perfect.

Favorite Lyric: “The sun will rise, and we will try again./ Oh/ Stay alive, stay alive, for me./ You will die, but now your life is free,”

Blurryface, 2015

Heavydirtysoul

Perfect start to an album. To this album. But also, like I pointed out in my other Twenty One Pilots post, this is a song that you can see almost the entire development for over the years.

Favorite Lyric: “Nah, I didn’t understand a thing you said,/ If I didn’t know better I’d guess you’re all already dead,/ Mindless zombies walking around with a limp and a hunch,/ Saying stuff like, “You only live once.””

Fairly Local

I’m always disappointed that this song doesn’t get more love or played at shows more. It was the first single off of Blurryface and honestly it is one of my favorites. Clearly.

Favorite Lyric: “I’m not evil to the core/ What I shouldn’t do I will fight/ I know I’m emotional/ What I wanna save I will try/ I know who I truly am/ I truly do have a chance/ Tomorrow I’ll switch the beat/ To avoid yesterday’s dance”

Polarize

This is another one that I feel doesn’t get enough love.

Favorite Lyric: “Polarize is taking your disguises,/ Separating them, splitting them up from wrong and right,/ It’s deciding where to die and deciding where to fight,/ Deny, deny, denial.”

Goner

Yet another song where you can watch it progress over the years.

Favorite Lyric: “Though I’m weak and beaten down,/ I’ll slip away into this sound,/ The ghost of you is close to me,/ I’m inside-out, you’re underneath.”

Trench, 2018

Jumpsuit

Three years since their last album and one year after the band disappeared from social media, touring, and everything else they come back with this. The start to what is sure to be an amazing album! I can’t wait to get the whole thing!

Favorite Lyric: “I’ll be right there/ But you’ll have to grab my throat and lift me in the air/ If you need anyone (If you need anyone)/ I’ll stop my plans/ But you’ll have to tie me down and then break both my hands/ If you need anyone”

Nico and the Niners

Again, I can’t wait for the whole album to drop in October. I will say, I can’t pick which of these two songs I like better.

Favorite Lyric: “What I say when I want to be enough/ What a beautiful day for making a break for it/ We’ll find a way to pay for it/ Maybe from all the money we made razorblade stores/ Rent a race horse and force a sponsor/ And start a concert, a complete diversion/ Start a mob and you can be quite certain/ We’ll win but not everyone will get out/ No, no”

What are your favorite Twenty One Pilots songs? Are you going to Bandito tour?
