Oscars 2018: Predictions

The Academy Awards are only an hour or so away and this year, I feel like I can actually make some educated guesses on who will win. I saw eight of the nine best picture nominations, which at least gives me a base. Below are a few of my predictions! Share yours in the comments! You can find the list of nominees here.

Actor in a Leading Role

Prediction: Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out

I think Daniel gave the best performance out of all of the actors in this category. Although, I will say that I did not see Denzel Washington’s performance in Roman J. Israel, Esq. Based on everyone else, I stand by this comments.

Actor in a Supporting Role

Prediction: Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Sam Rockwell was brilliant in Three Billboards. I’ve loved Sam Rockwell’s work since Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. His character showed depth and growth, despite being just a supporting role.

Actress in a Leading Role

Prediction: Saoirse Ronan, Ladybird

This is actually a really difficult choice to make. Frances McDormand, Sally Hawkins, and Meryl Streep also had incredible performances in their respective fields. Ronan just delivered an inspired performance in this coming of age story.

Actress in a Supporting Role

Prediction: Laurie Metcalf, Ladybird

Seeing this film with my mom and seeing her tear up and ask if she was like Metcalf’s character is what picked this category for me. She breaks your heart as a mom just trying to do what’s best for her family. For being brutal and honest and, well, a mom.

Cinematography

Prediction: The Shape of Water

Now, this was not my favorite film this year. This is really in the bottom half of my list for the best picture nominations. It was beautiful to look at though. Visually, this film has some truly stunning shots.

Costume Design

Prediction: Beauty and the Beast

Gorgeous. That’s all I have to say about these costumes. Plus all of the other nominations had very typical, day to day costumes. Phantom Thread has a chance to win this category since it is about fashion but all of the fashion was uninspired and full.

Directing

Prediction: Get Out or Dunkirk

I honestly struggled to make a decision since most of these films were incredibly well directed. Jordan Peele’s directing debut was impressive. Christopher Nolan made a brilliant war film. Even Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird would be a fantastic film to recognize.

Film Editing

Prediction: Baby Driver

Music (Original Score)

Prediction: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

The music just help to create the world of this story. It adds so much to what’s going on without being distracting

Best Picture

I need to just give my order here because I actually got to see all but one of these films.

  1. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
  2. Get Out
  3. Dunkirk
  4. Lady Bird
  5. The Post
  6. The Shape of Water
  7. Darkest Hour
  8. Phantom Thread
  9. Call Me By Your Name

Production Design

Prediction: The Shape of Water

Again, this is just a beautiful film visually.

Sound Editing and Sound Mixing

Prediction: Baby Driver

Visual Effects

Prediction: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

Prediction: The Disaster Artist

This whole story is insane and deserves this win. I also hope Tommy Wiseau is at the Oscars.

Writing (Original Screenplay)

Prediction: Get Out

This is just a never before seen story. It was amazing and one of my favorite movies of the year.
