I’ll be the first to say it: winter is not my favorite season. Sure, I love the holidays and getting to watch all of my favorite Christmas movies. I love digging out race tracks for my dog to run around in (he’s really little, guys). There are a lot of fun things to do in the winter. I don’t like being cold though. I don’t like when it gets dark super early. I don’t like having to clear off my car or, worse, when my windsheild freezes while I’m driving. It’s not fun. This love hate relationship with the season makes planning date nights a bit of a challenge. If you’re like me though, have no fear. Here are some date night ideas to take you through the winter with ease!
Stay at Home
Sometimes, the best date nights are ones where you stay inside.
Blanket Fort// Indoor Camping
So I got inspired for this date night idea while reading ChiGoalDigger’s Fort Building 101 blog post (which you can check out here). I honestly saw this post, immediate texted my boyfriend and told him that we’re going to have to build a fort one of these nights. Or better yet, go indoor camping and set the tent up in one of our rooms (I’m really trying to get out of winter camping). So, what do you need to make this date night happen?
- String or twinkle lights
- Lap top with this video to start
- Your favorite snacks
- A hot beverage
- Comfy clothes
Of course you can make this work for whatever your couple style is. I, for one, can guarantee this fire video quickly turns into a movie but it is a nice start. What is great about this date night is you can pretty much do it for free just using what you already have!
If you are a competitive couple, this might be the night in you need: Cookie Decorating You can make the dough and decorations yourself or stock up at the grocery store and then get to it! Make it a challenge. Give each other a few cookies and then decide on themes. See who can make the best Christmas Tree. Who can make the best cookie version of the other? Is your Santa cookie more jolly than theirs? There is only one way to find out! Get to baking.
Pick your favorite movies and make a weekend of watching them all! Or make this a repeat date! Here are just a few of my favorite movie marathon ideas:
- Christmas Movies (you can see my favorites in this post)
- Harry Potter Movie Marathon (It would only take like 20 hours to watch all of them…)
- Lord of the Rings Marathon (Extended cuts only of course)
- Star Wars
- Star Trek (new ones or the classics!)
- Toy Story
- Classic Disney Movies
You can one up this date night by turning some of the movies into drinking games. I have to say, some of the Rankin and Bass Christmas movies really lend them selves to drinking games. Look for the name Heater on Santa’s list in Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Trust me.
You don’t want to spend all winter being cold, right? Here are some indoor but out of the house date ideas.
There are plenty of movies coming out this winter to check out while they are in theaters. Plus there is just nothing better than watching a movie in the theater, where it was meant to be watched. Here are some of the movies that I’m excited for this winter.
- The Disaster Artist, December 1st. (James and Dave Franco)
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi, December 15th (Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamil)
- Pitch Perfect 3, December 22 (Anna Kendrick, Ruby Rose, Hallie Steinfeld)
Museums of any kind are a great place to head to for a date in the winter. They’re indoors and give you a chance to take in some culture. Plus they might even have some interesting events to make your outing even better. Head over to an art museum and maybe they’ll have a wine tasting. History fan? Check out historical houses and their time period appropriate Christmas decorations!
Sometimes, you just have to get outside and enjoy the season!
There is nothing better than taking a drive around the neighborhood and taking in the different light displays that people put up for the holidays. Plus it makes a great date night. Make some hot chocolate in some travel mugs, maybe pack up some of those cookies you’ve decorated and make your perfect Christmas playlist before heading out to take in the wonder. This can be even better if your town or a town near by has a holiday light drive.
Don’t want to drive through the lights? See if there’s a walkable lights display you can explore in your area! Plus, think of all of the great pictures you can take them for your Instagram and other social media accounts!
Okay, so this one is a mix of indoor and out depending on how much walking you have to do. If your area has a holiday themed bar crawl, why not check it out? The day that this post goes live, my boyfriend and I are actually at a Santa themed bar crawl in Boston (which you can read all about next week!). This is a nice way to get out and celebrate the holidays together or with friends (double date maybe?). Plus if you find an event like the one we’re attending, you may even get to dress up with 2,000+ other people as Santa!
